About Max.

Max Yang is a photographer based in both Los Angeles and Beijing. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree with distinction from the ArtCenter College of Design in 2022. https://www.artcenterphoto.com/max | https://www.artcenterphoto.com/news/maxyang

Max holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Arts Leadership and Administration from the University of Southern California, conferred with departmental honors in 2023, and is currently pursuing a fully-funded Master of Arts (M.A.) in Cinema and Media Studies at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Max’s current research investigates the ephemeral nature of queer memory and archives, queer failure and persistence in post-socialist Chinese contexts, and the spatial politics of queer pleasure in contemporary Chinese ballroom culture. Max has presented her ongoing research at annual/graduate conferences. By anchoring abstract questions of queer theory in concrete cultural settings, Max’s work demonstrates both theoretical nuance and contextual specificity.

Alongside her academic work, Max’s professional experiences have included ongoing positions each semester as a Teaching and Course Assistant at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, as well as previous roles as a Press and Communications Intern at Make Room Gallery in Los Angeles, a Contract Art Director for ASUS, and an Assistant in Art Direction and Postproduction at Fabrique in Beijing, etc.
